How do I write about the sly pleasure that is Along Came A Wolf?
I wasn’t sure what to expect when I started this book. I knew that it was a Young Adult novel and was advertised as a steampunk fairy-tale, but what on earth did that mean?
Mr Dreece enchanted me, a not-so-young reader, from the first pages. The main characters are bright, vivid, and somehow comforting, in the way that an old book of bedtime stories would be. They, along with a strong supporting cast made this thrill a minute sail-cart ride a book that I just couldn’t put down.
Then about three chapters in, the little pieces started making sense as the half-remembered fairy tales of my childhood started taking new and different forms. I don’t want to get too spoilery, but Eg and Bakon? Really Mr Dreece?
There is a sense of fun and a twinge of irreverent homage to the ancient stories that makes this book a breath of fresh air in a genre that often takes itself far too seriously.
Book two is on my Kindle and I can’t wait to start it!
Recommended most highly for Tweens, Young adults, and for young-at-heart oldsters like me!
